ok so I’ve been watching the hxh anime aaannnnddd I really like it but it’s definitely not something to put on a pedestal. for a shonen, it’s pretty great. not a single episode feels like filler (until the chimera ant arc, at least; even then it only felt slow while it was setting everything up) and the protag’s whole thing isn’t “I need to protect my friends!!!!” even though gon totally gives off that pure, innocent lil kid vibe (like, child goku, pretty much).
there are two things that really bug me about it though: women, and the chimera ant arc.
the chimera ant arc….. like I said, it felt like it took a while setting up, but that’s not a big prob, really. it just…. it could’ve been SO MUCH BETTER? I mean, you have this genuinely creepy human-sized ant queen thing at the beginning, and the ants pass down genetic traits, right? well, I got my hopes up and was expecting some really creepy sci-fi stuff, but the ants all turned out to look like shitty cartoon characters. what the fuck was that? what even? they could’ve been like a weird gore-fest and that would’ve been SO MUCH BETTER, imo.
and the female ants? what the hell?
besides the queen and the little girl (a symathizable mother figure who gets killed off, for the feels, and a daughter who gets all mutated and shit, literally only to hit you in the feels) the other female ants have tits. why? why would they have breasts why…… women in this series are really shittily (please do not check if shittily is a word) handled. I didn’t write down anything while watching and my memory is hazy now, but… hmmm…. hunter x hunter does have some kick-butt female characters but most of them are pretty poorly handled. palm dates a twelve-year-old: she’s pretty much only around to gain the approval of her mentor guy. blue-haired bee girl is killed just as another example of how fucked the ants are. killua’s mom doesn’t really do anything other than fawn over how good he is at portraying the intended audience’s power fantasies. killua’s oreimo shit with his sister—well, I guess that’s not really that bad. bisky is great but even she doesn’t do… anything… other than train the kids. I fuckin’ loved pakunoda (besides her character design, like, no, she is a fictional character she is not choosing to show off her tits) she was a pretty well-rounded character, excepting, of course, that she did end up killing herself for the boss man. ok, yeah, the phantom troupe women aren’t as horrible but in all honestly none of them have agency. they don’t impact the plot, most of them are just there to give boners or fawn over the male characters.
if you read the whole thing, I’m really sorry
